What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease which damages the optic nerve connecting the retina to the brain, often associated with intraocular pressure within the eye. Glaucoma typically affects those aged over 40, but can occur at any age. If Glaucoma progresses, permanent vision loss can occur - however early detection can prevent or reduce such vision loss in most patients.
Is Glaucoma Surgery Permanent?

What are my Glaucoma Treatment Options?
Eye & Laser Centre employs the latest techniques and equipment to detect and treat glaucoma.
This includes state of the art visual fields analysis with rate of progression measurements with future performance estimation (up to 5 years ahead). OCT optic nerve head analysis is available with stability comparison software. Stereo optic nerve photos continues to be used and still provides, with the other modalities, a gold standard for monitoring. All modern treatments are available, including preservative free eye drops, SLT laser (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty), and iStent.
Advanced augmented filtering surgery modalities are used together with bleb enhancement techniques to optimise intraocular pressure control and assist patients to reach their target pressures, no matter how onerous the target or serious the degree of glaucoma.
Available treatments include:
SLT Laser
SLT laser alone can reduce your eye pressure without the need for daily eyedrops. It also has the advantage of being able to be redone when the effect wears off. This is done in the clinic, sitting at the Laser.
iStent
iStent is a small implant that allows for better fluid drainage that will reduce your pressure. This is usually inserted at the time of cataract surgery, but can also be used as a stand-alone procedure in some cases. This is done in the operating theatre.
